Originally released in 1976, Steal Your Face is the Dead’s fifth live album and 13th overall. It was recorded October 17-20, 1974, at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom during a “farewell run” right before the band went on an indefinite touring hiatus.
The album captures the shows utilizing the band’s massive, revolutionary 75-ton “Wall of Sound” audio system. However, the album is one of the band’s most controversial releases — fans and critics originally complained about a muddy sound mix and a lack of the band’s signature extended jams, focusing instead on shorter, tighter song structures. It was even affectionately dubbed “Steal Your Money” by fans and the band themselves due to the rushed nature of its release.
This 50th Anniversary edition featured upgraded audio remastered by David Glasser. It’s pressed on official “Grateful Red” and “Stealie Blue” vinyl colors developed by Pantone.
