Smith’s third studio album, Either/Or, was recorded in several locations, mostly in Portland, Oregon. At the time, the singer-songwriter was still a member of Heatmiser, and the album was released in February 1997 following Heatmiser’s dissolution.

Employing the use of a variety of instruments — from drums to harmonica and organ to cello, all of which he plays himself —  the album’s sound is more lush and rich than Smith’s previous recordings. Throughout each song on Either/Or Smith confronts the demons that haunted him, reflecting on failed relationships, the perils of stardom, and the unrelenting pull of addiction.
