Nirvana — Nevermind (30th Ann. 2-LP + Bonus 7")
Vinyl LP + Bonus 7" Digitally Remastered & Expanded
Nevermind is the second studio album by Nirvana, originally released on September 24, 1991. It propelled the band (and alternative rock) from underground into the mainstream and helped usher in the Grunge era. Produced by Butch Vig, it was Nirvana’s first release on the DGC label, as well as the first to feature drummer Dave Grohl. Nevermind is album No. 2 in what was to be Nirvana’s sadly-too-short discography. In addition to “Smells Like Teen Spirit,” Nevermind produced three other huge singles: “Come As You Are,” “Lithium” and “In Bloom.”
I still remember where I was when Nirvana’s Nevermind came blasting through the air in the fall of 1991, with “Smells Like Teen Spirit” leading the way. Kurt Cobain said his aim for Nevermind was to sound like “The Knack and The Bay City Rollers getting molested by Black Flag and Black Sabbath.” On that count, Nirvana’s Nevermind succeeds, combining ferocious power chords with pop hooks for a record that is as fresh today as when it bumped Michael Jackson’s Dangerous off the top spot on the Billboard charts. Then there’s the iconic album cover. Who doesn’t like a little baby dongle with their grunge!?
Nevermind went on to sell 30 million+ copies worldwide. At the time, Cobain was listening to bands like The Melvins, R.E.M., The Smithereens and The Pixies, and their influences certainly show. Nirvana reportedly played a one-off gig, where “Smells Like Teen Spirit” was debuted, to get the gas money to make it to L.A.’s legendary Sound City Studios — and the rest is history.
