Originally released in 1961, Out There features Dolphy in a quartet with bassists Ron Carter (cello) and George Duvivier, and drummer Roy Haynes. It was Dolphy’s second solo album, released following his time with Charles Mingus. The album features four original compositions by Dolphy, one of which is a collaborative effort with Mingus, and three covers: “Eclipse” by Mingus, “Sketch Of Melba” by Randy Weston and “Feathers” by Hale Smith. Dolphy (1928-1964) was a jazz alto saxophonist, bass clarinetist and flautist; he extended the vocabulary and boundaries of the alto saxophone, and was among the earliest significant jazz flute soloists.
