Chris Cornell, lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist for Soundgarden and Audioslave, was one of the lead instigators of the 1990s grunge movement, was a prolific songwriter, and is well-known for his nearly four-octave vocal range. Nominated for 16 Grammy Awards, he won three. He was voted “Rock’s Greatest Singer” by readers of Guitar World, ranked #4 on Hit Parader’s “Heavy Metal’s All-Time Top 100 Vocalists” list, #9 on Rolling Stone’s “Best Lead Singers of All Time” list and #12 on MTV’s “22 Greatest Voices in Music.” After struggling with depression most of his life, he was found dead in his Detroit hotel room on May 18, 2017, after performing at a Soundgarden concert at the Fox Theatre. His death was ruled a suicide by hanging.
