Led Zeppelin — III

Remastered by Jimmy Page and pressed on 180-gram vinyl — original jacket art

Led Zeppelin III was the most eagerly anticipated album of 1970 — and absolutely lived up to the anticipation. With hits like “Immigrant Song” and “Gallows Pole,” it was a best-selling follow-up to Zep’s the first two albums.

Jimmy Page and Robert Plant wrote much of the material for Led Zeppelin III in a remote Bron-Yr-Aur cottage in Wales. There was no electricity — and it shows in the decidedly acoustic flavor of Led Zeppelin’s third record. Page’s acoustic Harmony guitar shines on songs like Gallows Pole and Celebration Day. Bassist John Paul Jones emerges as a true multi-instrumentalist on Led Zeppelin III, with intricate work on mandolin and double bass as well as synthesizer. Instead of being commercial suicide as many critics predicted, the brilliant gamble of Led Zeppelin III paid off and marked a turning point in Zep’s music. In a big way, Led Zeppelin III proved that the band was not just another hot-and-heavy white British Blues Band ala Deep Purple or Ten Years After.

The Led Zeppelin III album cover is a surreal collection of images on a rotatable laminated card disc, or volvelle, which showed through holes in the cover — and provided for hours of stoner fun!
